Thames Williamson, a contract writer for Warner Brothers, offered his views to Wald on the ways in which they could adapt the story without angering the PCA. He suggests elimination of the “sexual rough stuff,” explaining that it does not “materially affect the story.”

His character descriptions offer fascinating insight into the methodologies studios would use to both placate Breen and maintain audience sympathy for characters. The character of Mildred is described as “a Stella Dallas” who is “naturally inclined towards sexual satisfaction with both Wally and Monty” “but she never steps over the line.”

Compliance with the Production Code often meant promoting a rigid worldview that was intrinsically racist, sexist, and homophobic.
